Remembrance Service on Rathlin Island
On the 16th November a Remembrance Service took place on Sunday at St Thomas’ Parish Church, Rathlin Island, bringing together veterans, serving personnel, civic representatives, and island residents to honour those who gave their lives in service to their country.
Organised by the Ballycastle branch of the Royal British Legion, in partnership with local branches representing the Royal Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force, the event highlighted Rathlin Island’s enduring maritime and military heritage.
The service was led by The Reverend Patrick Barton, of Ballintoy, Dunseverick, and Rathlin Parish Churches, who delivered a moving sermon reflecting on sacrifice, remembrance, and the strength of community.
Among the distinguished attendees were Mr David McCorkell, Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim; Alderman Richard Stewart, Deputy Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council; and Councillor Dawn Huggins, the Council’s veterans’ champion. They joined members of the Royal Naval Association Limavady Branch and Royal British Legion veterans in paying their respects.
More than ten wreaths were laid in the adjacent graveyard at St Thomas’, honouring both known and unknown servicemen, including sailors who tragically lost their lives at sea. The ceremony recognised the breadth of military service—Royal Navy, Army, and RAF—uniting organisations and individuals in a shared moment of reflection.
A particularly poignant moment occurred during the return journey to Ballycastle aboard the Rathlin ferry. The vessel paused at the site of HMS Drake, where Royal Navy Officer Barry McWilliams laid a wreath at sea—an act of deep symbolism commemorating the sailors who perished from the ship.
The organisers expressed their gratitude to all who attended and contributed to maintaining the solemn traditions of remembrance on Rathlin Island.
