Royal Naval Association Mentors
Based at HMS Raleigh in Plymouth
The RNA mentors are a group of dedicated RN veterans who give their time to helping young recruits pass their first 10 weeks of training, known as Phase 1.
The mentors are outside of the chain of command, so can be approached in confidence by the recruits themselves, or their families, who may need reassurance or advice on all things relating to launching their new life in the Royal Navy Family.
Mentors also welcome questions from families – the RNA understands that the new recruit’s journey must be supported by their nearest and dearest. As such, it is the RNA’s pleasure to support their families too.
The mentors are DBS’d and put the safeguarding and welfare of the recruits at the centre of all they do.
Phase 1 training can be as challenging for the families of recruits as it is for the young people themselves.
Sometimes Phase 1 training is the first time the young recruit has been away from home. Others might be leaving young children and partners on the other side of the country, and in some cases, the other side of the world.
The new recruits deserve our support and the RNA will be there for them from their first day of service and for the rest of their lives. And for their families too.
Anyone with a Naval story can join the RNA. Family members and friends are encouraged to join as Associate Members so they can keep up to date with our offers and events (which are often open to family members as well as serving and veteran members).
