The Royal Naval Association held its annual conference at The Caird Hall, Dundee on 28th/29th June 2008with some 108 delegates attending supported by about 100 observers.
The citizens of Dundee made members of the Association very welcome. The facilities of the Caird Hall were superb while the Church Service in the Cathedral Church of St Paul and its associated marches (34 Standards were paraded) were truly memorable.

Biennial Parade 2009

IMC_Windsor_Cenotaph_270.jpg

The Royal Naval Association Biennial March to the Cenotaph was on Sunday 13th September 2009.
The Royal Naval Association is unique among ex-RN Organisations in having the privilege of parading in Whitehall in alternate years. In recent years, as in most things, numbers have been falling off however following the sensible rule of “use it or lose it” it was decided early this year that the RNA would invite some brother and sister Associations to participate in the march, although it would still be the RNA parade. Our offer was received with alacrity, and on the day we were joined by representatives from The Association of Wrens, The Royal Marines Association, The HMS GANGES Association, The HMS ST VINCENT Association, The Federation of Naval Associations, The HMS BELFAST Association, The Submariners Association and the International Maritime Confederation.

Conference 2009

Conference_2009_photos_153.jpg

A considerable number of delegates and observers have declared the 2009 Conference the best event for many years and certainly one (from observation) which was enjoyed to the full. Held in The City Hotel, Londonderry the majority of events associated with the Conference were confined to the hotel and it proved to have fine facilities and enormously helpful and pleasant staff – only about 100 delegates attended but these were supported by about 135 observers and an excellent time was had by all. The City authorities bent over backwards to make the RNA feel welcome, while the Conference was well supported by the Second Sea Lord (Admiral Sir Alan Massey CBE ADC) who was awarded a knighthood (KCB) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List which was announced on the morning of the Conference Day – another cause for celebration. The Royal Navy was also represented by HMS CATTISTOCK which was visiting Londonderry for our Conference Event – CATTISTOCK’s Ship’s Company played a full part in our RNA Programme, attending a number of social events and joining us for the march to our Church Service on Sunday.

HMS_Southampton_216.jpg

HMS Southampton decommissioned at Portsmouth Naval Base HMS Southampton – the sixth ship to bear the name - was built at Vosper Thornycroft in her namesake city and launched on January 29 1979. She was commissioned into service on 31 October 1981 but her initial trials period was cut short by the Falklands conflict.
