I was a RAF Enginer Officer and served in the Falklands Islands with the Chinook Detachment at Kellys Garden from April to August 1983. During my time I was part of a party that found and recovered Seadart Missile JZ391. The remains of the missile were collected by HMS Birmingham in July 1983 and I have a letter from Cdr Gale, Captain HMS Birmingham, thanking me for giving them the missile and an indication that the missile may have been fired by HMS Cardiff in May 1982. I have a photo of the missile taken at Kellys Garden and the original letter from Cdr Gale. I understand that the remains of the missile may be in a Navy Museum in Portsmouth? The 25th Anniversary of FI Conflict and a recent sorting of my photos has prompted this inquiry. I would be happy to part with the original letter and photo of the missile if anyone is interested?

My father served on the HMS Arrow and was on her when they went to the aid of a stricken merchant ship that exploded. Dad survived to live out his life, many did not. Dad, died on the 31st May aged 90 years. He will be much missed by myself and especially by my sister Eileen who feels a deep internal loss. Bernard Holdroyd was a great father to us both. A hard working man all his life and was still doing and teaching ballroom dancing until aged 86. He is to be buried at Nabwood Cemetery Saltair near Shipley West Yorkshire at 1100 Thursday 7th. May he rest in peace for all those years he gave us at the risk of his own life.

I've only just read Vice-Admiral McAnally's essay on the Shatt al Arab affair. He's missing the point as to what is bothering us ex-matelots. Is the RN recruiting the right people? Young mothers with children at home worrying about birthday parties dont seem coxswain material or do boys wearing ipods being boarding party members. I back up my question about the right stuff by reminding him that we heard recently that a drink sodden barbeque was held on board one of H.M's ships in the Med. Yes a warship ! Where an apparently inebriated junior rating put themselves sexually in harm's way.

Can anyone help me
I\'m researching family history and found out that my grandfather was in active service in the Navy in WW2. His name was Arthur John Horne, and he served aboard HMS Rodney and HMS Berwick, in which order i don\'t know, but I was told that he was invalided out after his ship was torpedoed. I was told that he was a gunner and that he also achieved the rank of CPO. He lived in Exeter, Devon and passed away in 1976 before I started any interest in the family, missing out on the chance to ask him many questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there something wrong with this site, or is it the ships, how come no ex (Big E) HMS Eagle or HMS Cook come on this website, my late father served on these two, and was proud of the fact.
My Father was a Leading Stoker on the survey vessel (ex Lochie) HMS Cook from 1951 till 1954, then after a wee spell ashore got his draft to Eagle, again as a Stoker.
It was while on Eagle he got injured, but it was after surgery sometime in 1957 he got medically discharged.
He then joined the Sea Cadet Corps, as a Sub Lt. and after a long service, and after eventually becoming his unit\\\'s commanding officer, he retired, and the Royal Naval Area Officer Commanding (Scotland)Sea Cadet Corps, granted my Father the official title of, Lieutenant retired Royal Naval Reserve. something he was always, very proud of.
So come on, where are all the Big E and Cook lads.

I have been handed by a friend who is a member of your association cuttings from a recent edition of your magazine. They were a letter from David John Williams of Penysarn, Anglesey and the 'Heroes of the Royal Navy No. 26' on 'Seaman William Williams VC'.
I, too, met William Williams, in 1963, when my mother, Kathleen, and I went on my motorcycle to stay with her family from Anglesey. William Williams VC was my maternal grandmother's cousin, but he was known throughout the family as 'Uncle Will'. I remember the twinkle of delight in his eye when Mam asked him to show me his medals - he was of the type to be too modest to volunteer it but took great pleasure in my interest.
Although there is a distant cousin still in Holyhead, all of Mam's family have now passed away and the family grave is in Holyhead Cemetary. On a visit, the first for many years, in 2004, my wife and I went to Amlwch to find the road named after Uncle Will and I paid a visit to the British Legion in Holyhead where pictures of William Williams VC are still on display in the clubroom.
If you have the means of passing this message to David John Williams, I would be pleased for him to receive it.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Does anyone remember my Dad, Eugene A. G. Phelps? (d.o.b Sept 25, 1925)He was in the Royal Navy from 1943 until 1947.He came to the US in 1947 and married my Mom. He passed away in Jan of 1994 and I just want to have the town where I grew up put a British Flag yearly on his grave every Memorial Day (May 31st). Apparently his paperwork was lost in England where he grew up. He had 2 sisters, Rita and Thelma. His Mom was Gerturde (Trudy). His best friend was Bill Hackney from Loughton, Essex, England. I want to use any positive response from this guestbook to present to my congressman to help prove that my Dad was in fact In the Royal Navy. The town of Mendon, MA won't agree to put a flag on his grave yearly unless there is some proof.

Recently SAMA 82 & MOD have been talking regarding the 25th Anniversary of the conflict and have put forward a parade in London on 17th June 2007 with 350 being invited to St James Palace, quess what rank they will be??
The troops will be left in london to fend for themselves, accomadation will be in short supply as its trooping the colour on the saturday.
I for one think it stinks.
As an alternative Smokey Cole of the FVF (www.fvf.org.uk) & Gosport city council want to hold a full weekend event at HMS Sultan with a concert/get together & parade on the sunday similar to the last event.
They have been given a deadline of 6 weeks to see if this is the prefered option of the vets.
If you want to support this event could you please leave support on the guestbook

Hello all
As remembrance day is approaching I'm thinking of all of the veterans past and still here.
I'm looking for information on my Grandfather, William Wardropper who was a diver in WW2 and Ceylon (sri Lanka)
I have a photo of him with 10 other men. But that is all the information I have. If anyone could help in my search for old friends etc. I'd love to hear from you.

As you may have noticed the Carlisle branch decided to go its way after the unfairly decided increase in subs issue.
Well we have proved that there is life after the RNA.
We are still a part of the city life, recently we took our veterans to a local school as part of the Home front recall scheme as well as a street party. We have visited HMS Cumberland, HMS Ocean & the SAR unit at Gannet. We are also part of the FNA & to date have received more information than we ever received from RNA HQ! As well as supporting members affected by the floods in January.
I would also like to thank the RNA Branches that contacted me with offers of financial support for members who were flooded out, even when i explained we were no longer in the RNA the offer was still there.

Not sure if this story is true or not Soapy.I was stationed in HMS Terror 1956-59 married living ashore. I seem to recall that there was a coal burner in mothballs in the dockyard there. It was commissioned by some of "Terrors" ships company and took off for Suez. The story goes that it ran out of coal in the Indian Ocean. The crew set up a large sail made from hammocks and sailed to Ceylon.Could be a fish story or a NAAFI canteen yarn.

My name was peggy harrall.I would like to trace any of the wrens who went out with me on the SS Volendam and who landed up in alexandria instead of malta. There was Paddy, Helen, Druisilla, Helen Paula and about six other wrens whose names I cannot remember. We eventually were taken to Malta but had a very enjoyable look around before, going to el alamein and mersa matruh, where we were welcomed by some army signallers who took us sailing and gave us midnight bathing parties. We returned to Alexandria and were given conducted tours of the town exploring the cattacombs etc. We sailed to Malta on the then Polish ship, the Batory and the food was the worst I have ever had in my life. I lost touch when I was demobbed and I am especially sorry that I didn't keep in touch with Paddy. It is a long shot as I am now 80 yrs. of age, but you never know some of the others may still be around. Here's hoping.

Shows how up to date your forward thinking leadrship is havent they heard of the FNA, Which IS the umbrella organisation for nearly all the small ships assoc. They are clutching at straws again to increase membership

"There is room for all of those to exist with their own separate identities, but I think that they should come together in one big umbrella organisation; and just between you and me, Shipmates, I cannot think of a better name for that association, which would embrace everybody and give no offence to anybody, than the Royal Naval Association."

Anyone who served on the British Warship AJAX in 1947 may find this amusing. A signalman certainly would.
In July of that year I was a merchant marine cadet on the SS HOBART VICTORY, a US Flag vessel. We were in the Med, out of Brindisi bound for Malta. It was a beautiful day and I was on the flying bridge with the skipper, Capt. F.N. MacLean. A light on the horizon flashed a series of A's at us. The Captain said, "Sanders, you know that Morse code, answer that light."
I was barely proficient, being able to send and receive perhaps 12 words per minute. Anyway, the signalman on the other vessel very nicely slowed down to the point that I could communicate with him. We exchanged the usual "What ship, Where bound?" messages. He told me he was bound from Malta to Trieste, as I recall. Finally I turned to the Skipper, and said with great awe, "It's the British Warship AJAX, Sir!"
He replied, with a big smile, "No fooling!!"Failing to understand his humor,
I turned back to the flashing light, only to see the AJAX lying about 100 yards away on the starboard side and a huge name plate AJAX by her bridge. I must admit feeling foolish at the time, but I am still thrilled to have personally seen that great fighting ship.

I have recently published a book, which chronicles all shipping movements in North Queensland (Australia) ports from the outbreak of war on 3rd September 1939 until the end of 1942.

NORTH QUEENSLAND AT WAR - Volume.1 is the first of three Volumes collating all shipping movements through north Queensland waters during WW2 en route to or from South East Asia or the Southwest Pacific. Volumes. 2 & 3 will trace all ship movements throughout 1943 and 1944-46 respectively.

As a 'reference document', Volume.1 will be of value, not only to those interested in a slice of Australian maritime history, but also to those people who served on, or may have been one of the hundreds of thousands of Allied Servicemen and women that were embarked on, vessels, (large and small, Merchant and Naval), that frequented North Queensland waters during WW2.

Apart from the daily movements of Merchant Ships on the coastal trade, and those vessels direct from Britain or the United States, of course there were those which carried supplies or troops, bound for (or returning from), Darwin and Southeast Asia, New Guinea, or other theatres of war in the South West Pacific Area. The book also includes the movements of allied warships that took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the comings and goings of Australian Naval Task Force, which between “Coral Sea patrols”, took refuge within the Great Barrier Reef at Cid Harbour, Dunk Island, Challenger Bay and Stanley Island. The book further details the laying of mines within the Great Barrier Reef and the names of ships and their naval escorts that moved in Convoy north and south from Townsville.

I have created a web-site address, (www.northqueenslandatwar.com), which I hope you can please pass on to all those that you think might be interested.

For my site to be effective for searching, I urgently need it to be linked to suitable related sites. Are you able to please point me in the right direction?

The Queenborough and District White Ensign Association would like to announce that they now operate under the title Queenborough and District Naval Ensign Association. It appears that one person got confused (too much tot perhaps !!!) and complained to the Chatities Commission that we could be mistaken for the White Ensign Association Ltd.I can see that it would be an easy mistake to make. The Q&D WEA is based in the local Social Club on the Isle of Sheppey which is stacked with Naval History, while the WEA Ltd is based on a tiny ship in the Thames. The WEA Ltd Patron is H.R.H The Prince of Wales while our President is Silkie Easterbrook the well known Father Christmas lookalike (bookings now being taken).Where the two Associations are alike is in the charitable work they both partake in.I can understand that some people may get upset that their donation was given to WEA Ltd by mistake instead of to our funds. Please be assured that we do not mind as according to the WEA Ltd Chairman's Report 2004-2005, they are down to their last £1.5 million give or take a few £100K.By changing our name we have now hopefully appeased the confused individual and look forward to his monetary donation now he knows who to send it to.To the Chairman and Staff of the WEA Ltd we send our regards and thanks for the good work that they do.

see rattlers at it again sturring it up His figures on membership are right .what he ommits to say that a fair number of those those who are not members are those who have crossedthe bar. of the remainder a number have not renewed membership due to other sercumstances and can no longer attend due to health reasons . as in all organisations some dont renew membership anyway. As for Patrick Willoughby,s coments I woul agree with some of them, but you only get out of it what you are prepared to put in, come on Patrick drag your old shipmates in and turne things around if your not happy but dont give up the ghost yet Im not ww11 veteran either.

Greetings to all shipmates - did you know that the true and original "Impregnable" association is growing stronger each day - following a fantastic weekend at the Moat House Hotel - Chester the memebrs now look forward to meeting up in strength in July in Portsmouth for the main reunion and AGM. Ignore the cheap copy set up Impreg/drake - the self elected chairman is a reject from the true and original Impregnable Association

Greetings Sir-
I would value your help please!I am at present
embarking on my family history!I am doing well
so far-but need a little help to perhaps find
out more about some of my relatives who served
in World War 1 & 2!Firstly my grandfather-Fred
Owen Davies is shown in one of my family photos wearing a cap with "HMS Sovereign"across
the front! That picture was taken in 1916 when he served in The Royal Navy!Obviously, never having met my grandfather I have rather limited information of any other details that
relate to his position in Royal Navy-& I have
very few relatives who can help me find out
more!
All I know about my grandfather is he lived in Dudley with his wife-Ruby May Davies-
had 4 children-Christine Davies-Bertram George
Davies(my father)Uncle Fred Davies,& John Lewis Davies! So I would be grateful for your
help on that one please?
The 2nd enquiry is regarding my father-
his name is Bertram George Davies-& I also have a photograph of him taken on leave from
the Royal Navy in 1943.Again I have little
information to go on about where my father
served etc-but one thing I do know is that like my grandfather my father too served on
HMS Sovereign!
My father is still alive-but sadly is now in a home as he has developed Dementia-&
other ilnesses-hence he will be unable to
communicate! So my only hope is to ask you sir
if you can please advise me as to where I might be able to find information on HMS
Sovereign & those who served on her-both in
1916 & 1943-where the ship was in the years I
have mentioned! This would mean so very much to me to fill in the missing pieces of this as yet
incomplete puzzle.I met a gentleman on Saturday in our local town who was showing a
stall from World War II-including newspaper
cuttings!I asked him about the HMS Sovereign
& he suggested going to the Royal Navy
Association Website.I did that today but as
yet have found no details on HMS Sovereign
or who sailed on her.I look forward to your
response-If You Can Help!Thankyou-Harvey

Commodore B L Leighton

Dear Sir

I was given your details by the Royal British Legion and am contacting you on behalf of my father, Mr. Arthur Agass. (Identity PO/X 100 481)

Dad served in the Royal Marines during 1939-1945 and is currently living alone in Chingford. He is a healthy 88 but is naturally reaching many limitations.

My reason for writing is that my father has a desire to march on Armistice Day. He has agreed in principle, and with our support, to attend the Remembrance Sunday march of honour at Whitehall this year. This is a radical change of mind for him after so many years of "not looking back".

We want to take this opportunity before it becomes too difficult for him and before a change of heart. Is there a possibility of making arrangements for him to attend along with fellow comrades? I have no idea of where to start and am asking for your advice on what to do next. I am not sure of what criteria or entitlement there is to take part but I am sure you can appreciate how important this is to us all. I am willing to do what is needed to help along the way.

I contacted the local Loughton branch of the Royal British Legion last week and was made to feel very welcome by the standing chairman and secretary. Regrettably, my father is not the type of person to socialise and would find it very difficult to attend meetings and social evenings at the local branch; I therefore feel they can not help with regard to this particular request and I also understand they do not make arrangements for Whitehall anyway.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Norman Agass
